FEES uses the patient’s actual diet and their own chair position — not barium in a radiology chair. What we see is how they actually eat. We get the answers that you need.

Repeatable

There is no radiation exposure with FEES, so the study can be repeated as a patients's status changes or to document the need for or progress with dysphagia therapy.

Ordering FEES for your patient

An order for FEES should include:

• Patient name, date of birth, and location (of your office or nursing facility)

• The words "Flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)"

• Relevant diagnosis and the clinical question you want answered

• Precautions for nasal endoscope insertion or any dietary restrictions.

• Referring provider name, NPI, and preferred contact for results

Where we travel

CoastalSLP is based in Newport News and travels to nursing facilities and physician offices across eastern Virginia. If your location is near the edge of this map, ask — coverage depends on scheduling availability.

Peninsula

Newport News, Hampton, Williamsburg, York County, Poquoson, Gloucester, and surrounding York and James City County communities.

Southside and South Hampton Roads

Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Smithfield, and Isle of Wight County.

Beyond these areas

We schedule outside these areas by arrangement, generally for facilities and offices with several patients to be seen in one visit. Ask and we will tell you honestly whether we can serve you well.

How is this billed?

Patient's insurance is billed by CoastalSLP directly to your patient. There is NO cost to the physician or the practice.

Does a physician have to be present during the exam?

No. Virginia requires general physician supervision — a physician available in the event of an emergency, either physically present in the nursing facility or reachable by telephone. In a physician's office, the physician must be on premises, but does not have to be present for the FEES. We confirm this arrangement in writing with each location before the first visit, along with the emergency backup protocol.
